The Advisor Development Institute is coordinated by Academic Advising Services in the Division of Academic and Student Affairs. Workshop facilitators come from across the University. The ADI offers faculty and staff a chance to demonstrate their commitment to teaching and advising at NC State University. This professional development opportunity has evolved from a single advisor training workshop to a comprehensive program that actively engages undergraduate advisors, advising administrators, and others committed to student success.
The Advisor Academy
The Advisor Academy is a two-day intensive workshop experience covering common advising situations, key referral points at the University, and effective communication with advisees.
The next Academy takes place September 6-7, 2018. The application will open here on July 25, 2018, at 9:00 am. For more information, please contact Donna Burton at djburton@ncsu.edu
What is the ADI Certificate?
The ADI Certificate recognizes participation in six workshops – four core workshops and two elective sessions – focused on components of effective advising and provides advisors with an opportunity to assess their effectiveness as an advisor. The certificate program is designed so that the ADI Certificate can be earned within a one year time frame. However, should a participant need two years to complete the program, this can be accommodated. Recipients receive their certificates at the annual University Advising Awards ceremony each January.
There are two ways you can earn the certificate:
(1) Participate in four core workshops
- Introduction to Technology and Policy/Advising Situations
- Communicating with Advisees and Developmental Advising
- Career Readiness
- Inclusive Advising
PLUS two other sessions of the participant’s choice (either Advisor Roundtables or Topic Sessions or a combination of the two). A simulated advising appointment with feedback from an experienced advisor completes the certificate requirements.
Core workshops for the Fall, 2018, semester will be publicized in September. All four workshops will be offered one time each starting in October.
(2) Participate in the Advisor Academy
PLUS two other sessions of the participant’s choice (either Advisor Roundtables or Topic Sessions or a combination of the two). The simulated advising appointment described in option (1) happens on day two of the Academy.
You can declare your intention to earn the ADI Certificate here: http://go.ncsu.edu/adicertificate You will then receive regular communication about the Core Workshops, Advisor Roundtables and Topic Sessions coming up. You will also receive a Google Sheet where you can track your progress.
