If a student on Federal Financial Aid does not need to be full time in their last term but enrolls in classes that put them at 12 credits or more, they may be required to pay for anything above what they need to graduate.
A student can take courses toward their declared minors if that bring them to full time and have it paid for
This can be particularly problematic if they are on grants rather than loans, and we can’t tell as advisors what type of aid they have. Financial Aid encourages us to send students over who have any questions as it can get complicated.
Note that each term, students on aid are required to verify that everything they take is necessary for their degree. I am sure they don’t always read the fine print, but still, the responsibility is completely on them. That said, we can prevent unpleasant surprises by letting any graduating senior know that if they are on federal financial aid and don’t need to be full time to complete their degrees, they should check with financial aid before enrolling in any “extra” courses to prevent unwanted and unexpected bills next term.
