All advisors must be familiar with FERPA prior to working with students.

  • This act is commonly referred to as FERPA, or the Buckley Amendment. It governs the sharing and handling of educational records and applies to both former and currently enrolled students. Some records, such as directory information, can be designated as public information. No other records can be released to a third party without a student’s written consent. There are some exceptions to the FERPA protected records. These exceptions include parents’ financial records and confidential letters of recommendation. For more information regarding FERPA, including what encompasses directory information, refer to NC State’s official policy.
