Enrollment Advising

Enrollment Advising is the only meeting that is required for all students in our department. Advisors must release a student’s “Term Advisement Hold” for them to be able to enroll in the next term’s classes.

It is recommended that you either schedule 30 minutes for these appointments to be able to have in-depth conversations with advisees, or make yourself available and encourage them to come in at other times during the term for more in-depth conversations.

Helpful Tools and Resources for Advisors and Students

  • Resources for students changing their major
  • The Bio GuruApproved Special Topics courses by curriculum
  • Departmental Website: for most of what you need when meeting with students.
  • Advisors Resources Blog
  • Pack Planner:  When students create and maintain an online “Pack Planner” through graduation (assigning a tentative term to each course), they are taking ownership of their own degree process.  It makes advising much easier!  You can direct students to a tutorial for using the planner here:  https://youtu.be/F1u5J0b9LDA. Note that the Planner does not prompt students to plan a GEP Co-req (US Diversity, Global Knowledge, Foreign Language Proficiency),
  • Shopping Cart in MyPack:  If students fill their shopping cart in MyPack before their meeting with you, they will already know if a course they want to take is offered, open, and fits their schedule. If they have the Summer and Fall planned in the Pack Planner, it will make it even easier for them to fill their shopping carts.
  • Advising Form (to print or fill out online):  Filling out an advising form prior to a meeting forces students to think about what they are doing and why.  It also helps advisors organize the conversation during a meeting.
  • Enrollment Wizard in MyPack:    Students can search for classes directly from the degree planner, or filter by such things as courses that fit their schedule, are open, and fulfill a certain degree requirement.
